Every February, Canadians are invited to participate in Black History Month festivities and events that honour the legacy of Black Canadians, past and present. The 2020 theme for Black History Month is: “Canadians of African Descent: Going forward, guided by the past” which was inspired by the theme of the United Nations’ International Decade for People of African Descent (2015-2024).
On Friday, January 31st, BCAC volunteers and staff from Big Brothers Big Sisters attended the Black Community Advisory Council of United Way Greater Toronto annual Black Leadership and Recognition Breakfast to kick off Black History Month 2020. The event hosted over 230 attendees at the Mississauga Convention Centre, providing networking opportunities, as well as greetings from local dignitaries. Honorary Chair, Peel Regional Police Deputy Chief, Marc Andrews, gave a personal speech about perseverance, and the event concluded with a dynamic panel discussion about youth safety & education including perspectives from school officials, frontline staff, neighborhood police, and most importantly youth voice.
